Lions coach Dan Campbell, despite having quarterback Jared Goff under contract for two more years, did not rule out the team exploring top quarterback prospect Brendan Sorsby, who hopes to be deemed eligible for the supplemental draft next month

Campbell’s remarks caught attention around the league, and he could have been speaking for several coaches on contending teams with legit starting QBs right now when he addressed the situation this week.

“All I can tell you is that we look at everything,” Campbell told reporters as the Lions were concluding their offseason practices.

“[General Manager] Brad [Holmes] looks at everything, and so nothing is off the docket, so our eyes are open. Doesn’t mean we will make a move or we won’t.”

Everyone Investigating

It is incredibly rare for a quarterback prospect of this quality to become available this time of year.

For a league that prizes that position above all others, the allure is great, even with Sorsby carrying some extreme risk with him, given the depths of a gambling addiction he was treated for.

The supplemental draft on the whole is usually irrelevant, so for a QB who multiple team execs have told me carries a legit second-round value (based on athletic traits and on-field production, not accounting for his off-field issues) to be the only prospect for the entire league to focus on during an unusual time in the NFL calendar when general mangers are sitting on the beach with plenty of time to watch film, will work in Sorsby’s favor.

Teams can get out of most every quarterback contract in the NFL within the next 18 months (by nature of their very structure), so if a team like the Lions, who have been very willing to make picks in the first round that other teams would not, opted to part with a high pick in 2027 to land Sorsby now, no one in other front offices would flinch.

Also, keep in mind, the Rams, considered an elite front office, just used a first-round pick on a developmental QB who isn’t expected to play for multiple years with league MVP Matthew Stafford still under contract.

“It’s a copycat league,” as one general manager reminded SportsBoom.

Additionally, a growing number of league insiders believe the New York Jets are emerging as the strongest landing spot for Sorsby, adding further momentum to the quarterback’s rapidly developing market.

Despite the Lions' noise, this feels more like due diligence than intent. Detroit are right to keep its options open, but with Jared Goff entrenched, a bold move for Sorsby would be a surprise. If there’s a bet to be made, the market likely overstates Detroit’s involvement compared to more QB-needy teams.
