NFL teams are turning their attention at a time usually reserved for vacations to draft prospect Brendan Sorsby at a time when he is preparing for the league’s supplemental draft.

It remains to be seen if the league will clear him to participate in the process, but quarterback-needy teams have to operate as if he will be.

And there is unquestionably significant interest in this prospect regardless of his gambling addiction and the extent to which he gambled on his own team’s games in college.

Despite the severity of that situation and Sorsby’s recent treatment for gambling addiction, it’s seen as a foregone conclusion in scouting circles that Sorsby will be selected within the first three rounds of the supplemental draft.

The Process Will Invite Many Bids

Teams are clustered in tiers for the supplemental draft based on their record from last year.

They must surrender their selection in the 2027 draft that aligns with the round in which they select Sorsby. Given the fact that lesser teams will be awarded him in the same round as a winning team submitted a bid, a more competitive team would be incentivised to part with a higher selection in hopes of actually landing the player.

“He’s going in the second round,” one GM told SportsBoom.us.

For those reasons, it’s quite possible that someone even submits a first-round bid for Sorsby, especially if that team expects its pick to be in the final few picks in that round and they would have no chance of getting a QB they like in 2027 that low in the process.

A team in that position could believe it can contend for a Super Bowl now with its current quarterback, but be willing to move on from him in the future based on his age, injury history or contract.

Sorsby sitting out a year would be ideal rather than having to play right away. If a team like Philadelphia, Houston or Tampa selected him, that would be the case.

If teams are prepared to overlook Brendan Sorsby’s gambling issues, it becomes a pure upside play over risk. That makes him a volatile bet in both football and betting terms, huge potential, but very little certainty on the outcome.
