NFL Execs Expect Philadelphia Eagles to Keep QB Options Open Into 2027

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is in the final year of his contract, which includes no real guarantees and the lack of any new additions or alterations to it to this point has sent a strong signal to the league about the franchise being open to upgrades in 2027.
It would be quite shocking at this point if the team did address the contract in any way at this point, and with a new offensive coordinator in the fold and disgruntled star receiver AJ Brown not traded to New England, as first reported by SportsBoom, and the team adding potentially impactful pass catchers with their top draft selections, there are no excuses for this passing game not to make major gains this season.
And anything less than that could very well result in someone other than Hurts being there starting games the following year.
“Dude, you know Howie (Roseman, Eagles GM),” said one NFL GM.
”He’s not sentimental. Look what they did with (former Lombardi Trophy-winning head coach Doug) Pederson. They are keeping their options open for next year (2027). This is it for Hurts there if he doesn’t step up.”
All-In To Win Now
Not many ownership groups and front offices are truly infatuated with winning a Super Bowl every year.
The Eagles unquestionably are, and they are willing to do things perhaps some other regimes might view as overly aggressive or cutthroat to accomplish it. While Hurts has delivered repeatedly in some huge playoff spots, including a Super Bowl, the offense has also oscillated wildly in other years, and Hurts has been unwilling to make big-time throws and push the ball into traffic, which has compounded some locker room issues.
It’s led to a strong sense around the league that, as difficult as it can be to find a calibre of quarterback who can win big in the postseason, the Eagles will be willing to do whatever is possible if need be. There is a chance that a two-time MVP like Lamar Jackson becomes available in trade, and the 2027 quarterback draft class is earning strong early reviews, too.
“Howie isn’t just going to sit on his hands if he thinks there are better options,” another longtime personnel executive said. “
We all know that. He’s going to stay as flexible as possible (at QB).”
Editor's Insight
This feels less about immediate doubt over Jalen Hurts and more about the Eagles staying flexible ahead of a potential 2027 QB trade market. If a top-tier option becomes available, Philadelphia are the type of team that would seriously explore it.
