Record-Setting Extension Still Expected for Puka Nacua, Say NFL Execs

Rams superstar receiver Puka Nacua is back with the team for spring practices following a checkered offseason that includes a lawsuit filed against him alleging he made an “antisemitic statement” and bit a woman on the shoulder, and also included a stint in rehab and therapy.
Nacua embraced the support he has received from the Rams and declined to speak much on the ongoing legal situations, but the mere fact that he was back with the team spoke to his importance to it and the front office’s belief in him.
Team sources have indicated privately that they believe Nacua needs to make better decisions about whom he associates with, but have told others around the league they believe Nacua has a good heart and they have applauded his efforts to get help.
Rams remain committed
And what is beyond debate is that Nacua is one of the most impactful players in the NFL, regardless of position, and he has uncanny chemistry with MVP quarterback Matthew Stafford and has emerged as the best weapon in the NFL at the wide receiver position. And therefore, it remains seen as something of a foregone conclusion in NFL personnel circles that Nacua remains in line for a record-setting contract extension that will likely eclipse what Jaxon Smith-Njigba signed with Seattle early this offseason.
“The contract language will protect the team (from off-field issues),” suggested one general manager.
“They built that offense around Puka. He isn’t going anywhere.”
The Rams shocked the NFL by using the 13th overall pick on quarterback Ty Simpson, and though they extended Stafford, his back has been a problem in the past, and this late in his career, any plans are subject to change. Trying to reboot this offense with a novice passer without Nacua would be suspect, and in taking Simpson, the Rams took themselves out of a prime position to select a pass catcher in that part of the draft.
Veteran Davante Adams is nearing the end of his career and is likely in his final season with the Rams, making Nacua’s place with the franchise even more vital.
Nacua made a point to share his feelings about the organization when he met the media, and league sources believe he will be looking to secure a new contract as soon as possible and not delay the process in hopes of getting closer to free agency.
Editor's Insight
Contract holdouts often act as an early warning signal for potential trade activity, as they can expose tension between player valuation and long-term planning. In the case of Puka Nacua, however, there’s little indication of that kind of fracture, meaning, if anything, the market still leans firmly toward an extension rather than any trade drift.
