Broncos Confident Bo Nix Will Be Ready for Training Camp After Ankle Surgery

Broncos starting quarterback Bo Nix suffered a significant ankle injury during the playoffs, but the team continues to be optimistic about a full return and anticipates him being fully cleared for the start of training camp in July.
There is also a strong sense within the organization that the upstart quarterback, who defied expectations in his first two years in the league, will take a lead forward in 2026 in terms of consistency with some of the changes being made within the organization.
Nix was unable to play in the AFC Championship Game after suffering the injury and requiring surgery, and the Broncos' offensive coaching staff underwent a shakeup after the season as well, with assistant Davis Webb becoming a hot name on the head coaching circuit.
A Tough Call, But The Right Call
The decision by head coach Sean Payton to move on from longtime assistant Joe Lombardi has a coordinator in name only (Payton called the plays), to allow for a promotion for Webb to get that title (and also call plays) was met with high marks around the league.
Lombardi had failed stints with the Lions and Chargers when he branched out before, and Webb, a former NFL quarterback, has been an excellent buffer, league sources said, when things occasionally get prickly between Payton and Nix.
“They kept the right guy,” said one long-time NFL personnel executive who has worked with Lombardi previously.
“I know that probably wasn’t easy for Sean. Webb has a chance to be special. I think they needed another voice more involved to take the next step with Nix.”
Webb is not far removed from playing the game himself, and Payton will have more time to focus on macro-level issues with this team on gameday, and also will obviously still have input on the offense on the headset.
Nix is eligible for a contract extension after this season, and in what is a critical season for him, the Broncos have upgraded personnel and, league sources said, many players on the roster are excited about the opportunity for Webb.
Editor's Insight
If Nix returns fully fit and adapts quickly to the revamped offensive setup, the Broncos could push forward significantly in 2026, but any lingering effects from his injury or growing pains under a reshuffled coaching structure could stall their momentum.
