Arizona quarterback Jacoby Brissett is skipping the team’s Organized Team Activity practices under a rookie head coach in hopes of getting a renegotiated contract after an excellent showing under duress in 2025.

NFL front office executives from other clubs, including some who have been involved in quarterback transactions this offseason, believe Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur, despite a crowded quarterback room, wants to keep Brissett as his starter to open the season, coming off an explosive campaign, and are sceptical that the team will trade the veteran before training camp.

One general manager who was in the market for several quarterbacks said he never felt like Brissett was available, even despite Arizona drafting Carson Beck and signing Gardner Minshew this offseason.

If anything, he thought that perhaps if a playoff team lost a starting quarterback in-season, with Brissett having maximum value and the franchise wanting to get a look at Beck, maybe he would be moved in that scenario.

“I never got the sense they were going to move him (this offseason), even after bringing the other guys in,” the GM said.

How Attractive Is he This Deep In His Career?

Whether or not Brissett can push them in that direction remains to be seen, and in hindsight, Brissett would have been far better off signing a one-year deal with Arizona a year ago rather than giving them team control for multiple seasons.

He quickly distanced himself from former first-overall Kyler Murray, once the former first-overall suffered an early-season injury and went on to be among the better deep-ball passers in the NFL despite being a journeyman to this point, second in the NFL in passing yards over the final 12 weeks of the season.

Brissett, 33, set to make just $5.4M this season, low even by back-up standards, tied for third in the league with 23 touchdown passes over the final 12 games, and he helped ignite young pass catchers who had been far more dormant with Murray as the starter.

While some NFL general managers are sceptical he can play at that level again, he has been a welcome addition to locker rooms throughout his career and could end up with more value elsewhere than in Arizona in a rebuilding year.

But there isn’t much of a trade market for him now, as we hear it, and they may have to address that contract regardless.

Brissett looks far more likely to stay in Arizona than be traded. Despite the contract tension and crowded QB room, the Cardinals don’t appear to have a realistic market willing to meet his value right now. If a move happens at all, it would likely be in-season rather than before camp, once injuries or roster clarity elsewhere shift the equation.
