South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers is not getting nearly the attention of other pro prospects for the 2027 draft in what could line up as a significant class of passers.
Perhaps he should be.
Several NFL evaluators, when pressed some on the class beyond Texas undergrad Arch Manning, who has impeccable bloodlines and a Hall of Fame name, pointed to Sellers as someone they believed could perform well enough to hear his name called quite early in the draft.
Numerous NFL teams are already eyeing that draft to fill their QB needs, and undoubtedly, several will be unloading more veteran talent between now and the midseason trade deadline to try to improve their chances of selecting as high as possible to secure a new quarterback.
Sellers isn’t getting as much media attention, but Oregon undergrad Dante Moore is seen as a potential top overall pick as well.
But the fact that Sellers is staying at South Carolina, familiarity within a locker room and on a roster is in short supply in college football now, with players essentially free agents in the portal every year, and with likely a better support staff around him, has some evaluators expecting big things.
Staying In School The Right Call
“I think he’s going to be right in this mix when it’s all said and done,” said one scout who has watched him several times along with most of the other quarterback prospects.
“A lot of people were down on him after last year, and I get that, but a lot of that is on Mike Shula (former offensive coordinator and play caller). He’s a bad play caller.
“This kid couldn’t overcome that. But if you are looking at this entire class for anyone who can be something like a Lamar Jackson-type prospect, it’s this kid. Watch, he’s going to have a big year. He made the right decision not coming out (for the 2026 draft).”
Shula was relieved of his duties late in the season, Sellers turned down offers reportedly up to $8M to stay with South Carolina, and the scout was bullish on the offense new play caller, Kandal Briles, could construct for Sellers this season. The scout estimated there are at least eight college quarterbacks who could merit strong consideration on the first two days of the draft should they maximize their development.
Of course, not all will, and injuries, unfortunately are often a factor, but this is a robust and intriguing group.
Editor's Insight
Sellers feels like a classic “wait a year and cash in” QB draft prospect. The tools and upside are clearly there, but the evaluation hinges on how quickly he adapts to a new offensive system and cleans up the inconsistencies. If the buzz around Kandal Briles’ impact proves true, he could easily move from intriguing name to top-tier 2027 contender. Right now, he’s a projection worth monitoring rather than a finished product.
