Jadeveon Clowney’s Most Likely Next Destination Revealed as Packers Emerge as Favourites

With Saints defensive lineman Cam Jordan returning to New Orleans recently, as SportsBoom said was in the works, veteran pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney is viewed as the best and most diverse pass rusher/edge defender still on the market, even ahead of some more high-profile names, and is expected to settle on a new team by late July when training camps begin.
Several teams are monitoring his situation, according to league sources, and he has posted three straight highly productive seasons after a star-crossed career since being a first-overall selection.
Clowney was strong for Baltimore, Carolina and Dallas in recent years, remaining stout against the run and also able to generate pass rush from the edge and inside in sub-packages.
Keeping him on a pitch count would be imperative at this stage of his career, but the same would be said of any of the veterans still available (Nick Bosa, Von Miller, etc.).
Clowney offers ample scheme flexibility and is accustomed to bouncing from team to team and staff to staff at this stage of his career.
Landing Spots
Every team in the NFC North, for instance, is lacking a defensive player in the mould of Clowney, and it would not surprise league execs if he ended up with Chicago.
Detroit or Green Bay, in particular.
Clowney is in no hurry to sign anywhere, according to sources with knowledge of the situation, and at this stage of his career, even training camp, or a full training camp, is not a prerequisite for him.
One executive told SportsBoom he has a hunch that Clowney ends up with the Packers.
Green Bay star pass rusher Micah Parsons is going to miss upwards of half the season returning from surgery.
Over the last three seasons, Clowney has had a top pressure rate among all NFL edge defenders age 30 or over (nearly 16%), and he has always been a strong run defender with long arms and core strength.
It wouldn’t be a surprise at all at this stage for him to land with a playoff team.
Editor's Insight
Clowney still looks like a classic contending-team addition rather than a long-term project, and the Packers feel the most logical fit given their need for proven edge depth. Expect movement closer to camp rather than early July. From a betting angle, Green Bay may already be shortening as perceived frontrunners in the market.
