Nicknamed “Puro Chicali”, a Mexican slang phrase that translates as “Nothing but or Pure”, Chairez has been gathering some momentum. While a 12-6 record at first glance may seem quite mediocre, Chairez has been starting to string some results together in the Octagon.

Yes, he’s had to deal with the disappointment of some cancelled bouts, but he was explosive against Vergara during last year’s UFC Fight Night event, which was also staged in Mexico. A rear-naked choke in Round 1 clinched a submission victory, and 67% of his wins have come via this method.

Although he could have ended up as a lawyer, Chairez focused his attentions on MMA, and he still has plenty of time on his side to improve. Chairez will be desperate to put on a show for the fans, and he will need to use his grappling skills to great effect if he’s going to continue his upward trajectory.

Felipe Bunes News

At the age of 36, Felipe Bunes is a bit of a journeyman on the MMA circuit. While he’s had four more fights than Chairez, Bunes’s record isn’t great either (14-8).

However, in terms of comparisons with Chairez, Bunes’s has also seen the bulk of his wins arrive via submission (64%), and both fighters are the same height. Nevertheless, Bunes has some serious power with his hands, boasting 51% striking accuracy.

Perhaps more worryingly, Bunes hasn’t been convincing recently. Against Rafael Estevam on his previous UFC outing in August 2025, Bunes struggled at times to get his combinations working, and he lost by unanimous decision.

Bunes will need to take the initiative against Chairez, and while experience does count for something, it remains to be seen whether he has the tools to overcome a UFC fighter six years his junior.
