How to Complete KYC Before NFL Sunday Kickoff

How to Complete KYC Before NFL Sunday Kickoff

What is KYC and Why Do Sportsbooks Require It?

KYC stands for Know Your Customer. Every licensed US sportsbook is legally required by the Bank Secrecy Act and state gaming regulations to verify your identity before you can deposit, bet, or withdraw.

Before you can submit your NFL bet, you’ll need to confirm your age, identity, and physical location. There are no shortcuts around it, and no licensed book will skip it. However, for most bettors, KYC protocols are done in under five minutes.

Documents You Need Ready (Gather These Now)

Prior to registering at a sportsbooks, make sure you have the following documentation:

  • Primary ID - A government-issued photo ID like a driver's license, state ID card, or passport.
  •  Last four digits of your SSN - Required at every major US sportsbook for identity cross-checking and IRS compliance.
  • Proof of address - Sometimes requested if automatic verification fails. A recent utility bill or bank statement (issued within the last 90 days) works.
  • Selfie or live photo - Some sportsbooks ask you to take an in-app photo alongside your ID. (Quick tip - have decent lighting ready).

How KYC Works at Sportsbooks

When you sign up, the sportsbook runs your details, including your name, date of birth, address, and the last four digits of your SSN, through automated identity databases in the background. This happens silently during registration, and for most bettors it's enough. If the system can confirm who you are, you're verified on the spot with no further action needed.

If the automated check can't fully confirm your identity (due to a recent move, a common name, or a database mismatch), the sportsbook will then ask you to upload supporting documents, typically a photo of your ID and sometimes proof of address.

Also, if you’re cashing out a large sum, you may have to deal with slower-than-usual withdrawal velocity as the book conducts more detailed verification checks.

How to Speed Up KYC in Time For NFL Sunday Kickoff

Signing up on Friday can save you a lot of frustration. Verification queues tend to spike on game days, which slows everything down right when you want to be placing bets. If you complete your registration a few days before, you’ll be fully set up and ready to deposit right at kickoff without delays.

You must always use your exact legal name. Even minor mismatches between your profile and your ID are one of the most common causes of KYC delays. The same applies to your address, so make sure you enter your current address exactly as it appears on official records.

If you’re required to upload documents, take the time to do it properly. Use good lighting, ensure all four corners of your ID are visible, avoid glare, and make sure the image is in focus. Poor-quality uploads often trigger manual reviews. It once took me almost 72 hours to get verified at FanDuel because of my not-so-clear screenshot.

Finally, have your last four digits of your Social Security Number. You don’t want to be scrambling, looking for your Social Security card, and miss NFL Sunday Kickoff!

Common KYC Problems and How to Fix Them

If you’re having issues verifying your sportsbook account, check out these easy solutions:

  1. Address can't be verified - Try a previous address or upload a utility bill that shows your current address alongside your ID.

  2. Name doesn't match - Check for typos in your signup form and contact support to update your profile name before resubmitting documents.

  3. Document upload rejected - Retake the photo in natural light. Ensure the Machine Readable Zone (the two lines of text at the bottom of your license) is clearly visible.

  4. Identity verification pending for more than 24 hours - Contact live chat directly. Escalating to an agent moves you from the automated queue to a human reviewer.

Bottom Line

KYC is a one-time hurdle. Sign up the night or two before game day, enter your information exactly as it appears on your license, and have your SSN digits ready, and the automated systems at DraftKings, BetMGM, Caesars, and FanDuel will typically clear you before you've finished making your coffee.

If you hit a snag, go straight to live chat. By the time the first Sunday slate kicks off, your account should be funded and your bets placed.
