Brendan Sorsby’s draft stock will invariably be impacted by the deal he has essentially struck with the NFL to be permitted to enter the 2027 draft without penalty.

Sorsby, who is currently receiving treatment for a gambling addiction that included betting on his own team’s games in college, remains an intriguing quarterback prospect in the draft.

However, his path to the NFL has been made more difficult by his circumstances. He would have been better served by the now-unavailable supplemental draft this month, where he would have been the only quarterback on the board.

The 2027 draft class is sizing up to be one with considerable quality and depth, and Sorsby will not be playing games to boost his stock between now and then, while the rest of that draft crop obviously will, as SportsBoom first reported.

The Canadian Football League was not inclined to allow him to participate, and it will not, and he will have to rely on workouts and training to prepare for the draft now.

The dynamic for his entrance into the league has shifted significantly, and the supplemental draft operates in a way in which the better teams would have to be willing to perhaps bid for his services a round higher than they otherwise might in order to secure his services in a weighted process.

It’s also easier to part with a higher pick in a vacuum with just one player up for bid than in a true draft where there are hundreds of draftable players available across all positions.

How Much Will It Hurt?

“Do I still think he goes in the second round… Probably not,” said one GM who was adamant previously about Sorsby’s draft position in the supplemental arrangement.

“There isn’t a comp for this, but not sitting out while everyone else plays… The timing now is going to work him again.”

The GM suggested Sorsby, as long as there are no other gambling-related issues with him between now and the draft, still likely projects as a “day-two” prospect (meaning rounds two and three).

If Sorsby avoids further transgressions, then he will not face NFL discipline for any off-field issues and can begin to practice and play with his new team immediately.

Sorsby’s talent still keeps him in Day Two range, but the new structure likely pushes him down boards. From a betting angle, early hype may be overstated, with value leaning toward a later-than-expected draft position.
