Tap again, and you can place more bets. Your heart is working, and so is the market.
This is what sportsbooks want.
In-game betting is quite popular in the US. AGA says that in 2023, there were over 54M people who placed legal sports bets. And all of the bets were made during the game. [1]
But is that excitement a sign of true market insight? Or is it a clever trick?
How the Market Moves (And why)
Live odds updates happen when the game is being played. You will most likely see:
- Who has the ball
- How many shots are there
- How much time is left
For example, if Patrick Mahomes throws an interception, the Chiefs’ chances go down. And if a UFC fighter starts to bleed, their odds decrease.
If you check the insights well, it may feel like the market is giving you clues. Sometimes it does.
Every live bet line sports book adds a profit margin of approximately 5% to 8%. [2] So even if you react quickly to a change, you’re still betting against the house.
The odds change faster than most people can think, so you can feel like you have an advantage. You saw the fumble, you acted quickly, and you think you've got the edge. But first, the computer algorithm saw it. Sources
Why Bettors Think Live Odds Are Honest
Live betting is generally fun and exciting. The main reason for this is how quick they move. And that quickness is what makes the odds feel real. When the Steelers go from +6.5 to +3.5 on the spread after a score, it looks like the market is being honest.
Behavioural economists call this outcome bias. After a big change, it feels smart to have a winning bet. Bad luck is a losing bet. This makes the bettor return more often, but not more carefully. [3]
Same-game parlays only make this problem worse. Say you have three bets at -110. You'd think all three are fair chances. But that's not how same-game parlays work. These legs are three different risks against you.
Where the Excitement Logic Breaks Down
Say you bet on a live game with odds of -200. You will have a ~66.7% chance of winning. And this means that you will have to win even more often to cover the extra fees. But this gap increases in fast live betting.
Look at the NBA playoffs. The Miami Heat rallied from a 17-point deficit against the Boston Celtics in Game 6 of the 2023 Eastern Conference Finals. Some books had the Heat winning 900-1. Miami fought back to win. That’s what makes live betting so much fun. They are not very common. Out here, you’ll read stories of teams that fall behind and don’t come back. And they are, basically, bad stories.
What the Market May Actually Be Saying
Computer programs change live odds in real time. The excitement you feel is real, but it is also created on purpose by the sportsbooks. The fast screens and live updates you see on the landing page push you to act quickly. I mean, you don't even have room to think carefully before you place a bet. Yeah, that's the main effect live betting has.
Because of this, the thrill of seeing odds change can feel like you understand the game. But it might just be excitement pushing you. These two feelings are not the same. In a market made to make money, this difference can be bigger than most bettors realize. And this is why most bettors find themselves betting even when the odds are stacked against them.
Industry Context
Regulated sportsbooks have invested a lot in live betting, and they are right to do so. This kind of betting brings in more money being wagered, which says people love it!
FanDuel and DraftKings say in-game betting represents a large percentage of all wagers. [4] Many operators like live betting because of how fast it is. On top of that, it encourages bettors to go for small bets even during slow moments in sports broadcasts.
Live betting using your phone is even faster. If you decide to use a US bookie to make a live NBA bet, you will place your bet in less than 10 seconds. Yeah, it's that fast! And this makes US sportsbooks user-friendly, which makes them retain and lure in more clients.
