Why Slots Drive 80% of US Online Casino Revenue in 2026

Why Slots Drive 80% of US Online Casino Revenue in 2026

Traditional casino slot machines alone produced $37.13 billion, comfortably outpacing table games at $10.05 billion. [1]

Online iGaming hit $10.74 billion for the year, growing 27.6 percent year-over-year. [1] And across every regulated state with published data, slots are the dominant revenue driver.

Growth Shows No Signs of Slowing

In Pennsylvania, online slots pulled in $194.6 million in December 2025 and were the highest source of gambling revenue for the month, ahead of online table games at $62.8 million and online poker at just over $2 million. [2]

For the full year 2025, Pennsylvania's iGaming revenue reached $2.77 billion, a strong 27% increase, and online slots constituted the overwhelming majority of that figure. [3] In the month of April 2025, online slots in Pennsylvania produced $169.5 million while online table games only brought in just under $60 million. [4]

New Jersey shows the same pattern, as internet gaming revenue reached $2.39 billion for 2024, growing 24.1% year-on-year. [5] It’s estimated that slots generate 75 to 80% of online casino revenue nationally.[6]

Online slot machines carry a house edge, which is typically between 4 and 10%, depending on the title. Table games like blackjack shrink the house edge all the way down to 0.5% if you know when to hit and stand, while the NBA or MLB moneyline typically comes with a 4% vig. Slots are far more profitable, which is precisely why they represent the largest content category on every licensed US online casino platform.

In March 2026, Pennsylvania's online slots generated $201.4 million on approximately $5.26 billion in total wagers, an effective hold rate of around 3.8 percent. [7] Online table games in the same month cleared $51.1 million on $3 billion in cumulative wagers, a retention rate of approximately 1.7 percent. [7] Slots drive more than double the revenue on similar wager volume. So it’s not surprising that 90% of games at US online casinos are slots, and operators are quick to promote them.

UX and Features Galore

Beyond economics, slots have a fundamental product design advantage. They require no prior knowledge or strategy, and a new player can open an app and spin within seconds. It’s possible to rack up 100 spins in under 10 minutes.

Table games, on the other hand, particularly poker, carry a skill dimension that creates a higher barrier to engagement and require concentration; otherwise, you’ll see the house edge explode.

In Q1 2025, slot games led in both volume and session duration across US online casinos. [8] Player preference data consistently favors high-volatility mechanics like cluster pays, bonus buys, tumble features, and progressive multipliers, which are exclusive to slots.

Slots are also optimized for portrait-mode touchscreen play in a way that table games are not. A hand of live blackjack requires attention, real-time decision-making, and a dealer interaction that translates awkwardly to a small screen during a commute.

A slot spin takes three seconds; this ease of use has proved decisive as mobile becomes the default and major operators have been cashing in. FanDuel's US iGaming revenue grew 42% in Q2 2025, driven substantially by slot engagement rather than online sports wagering, while DraftKings reported iGaming revenue up 24.9% in Q3 2025. [9]

Slots Aren’t Going Anywhere

Initially I thought slot machine dominance over table games came down solely to player preference. However, when I dug into the data, you see that operators are incentivized to stack their game libraries with slots and also funnel players to them, as they’re their highest-margin per-session offering, even more profitable than NBA SGPs.

In 2025, US iGaming crossed $10 billion for the first time, and operators have slots to thank. [10] Until table games offer improved accessibility, simplicity, and mobile design or until new mechanics emerge that replicate slot play, slots will continue to be the gravy train for American online casinos.
