While many viewed his move from Elche to New York as a "hiatus," Nicolás Fernández Mercau has proven exactly the opposite through his performances on the pitch.

Stepping into a "false 9" role during the 2026 season opener due to injuries in the forward line, the player has captivated Portuguese scouts with his rapid tactical adaptation.

Scouting Tribune

The two flagships of Portuguese football, Sporting CP and SL Benfica, have been monitoring Mercau in meticulous detail for two seasons.

It has been learned that scouting delegations personally observed the player in these critical MLS fixtures:

In the season opener, the player's physical endurance and decision-making under pressure were tested in a high-tempo match. Mercau proved his composure by converting a clinical penalty.

Against a Philadelphia side known for its defensive discipline, Mercau’s "small-space proficiency" and offensive creativity were noted.

In addition, starring with 1 goal and 1 assist in a historic 5-0 victory over Orlando City, the Argentine received a "perfect score" from the observers in the stands for his modern winger-playmaker profile.

Furthermore, his 2 goals against Colorado and 1 goal against Inter Miami FC proved just how much he has elevated his performance level.

Technical Observations

The analyses prepared in the notebooks of the Portuguese observers are as follows.

Despite his natural positions being the "number 10" or left wing, his ability to lead the line at New York City FC in the absence of a striker proved his immense tactical flexibility.

As a representative of the classic Argentine school, his soft touch and 1v1 take-on ability were found to be 100% compatible with the technical structure of the Portuguese League.

Standing at 1.72m, the player has adapted quickly to the athletic nature of MLS; his low center of gravity ensures he remains robust in physical duels.

Club Stance and Transfer Strategy

NYCFC acquired the player for a significant fee of approximately €8 million, and he is under contract until the end of 2029.

The club hierarchy views Mercau as the most valuable asset in the team’s "Designated Player" category.

While there is no official statement, it is rumored that the New York side will open negotiations at the €20 million mark.

Leaked reports suggest that both Benfica and Sporting are preparing their budgets for a formal bid in the summer window.

There is currently no formal offer between the clubs; the process is at the "strategic monitoring" level. However, Portuguese media claims both clubs have identified the player as their "primary summer target."
