Exclusive: Chicago Fire Reject €4M Pumas Offer for Philip Zinckernagel Amid Global Interest

The January 2026 window has ignited a full-scale transfer tug-of-war for Chicago Fire’s Danish star Philip Zinckernagel. 

After a season that ended Chicago’s long-standing playoff drought, the 31-year-old playmaker is one of the most coveted figures on the market.

Pumas’ €4M Approach Rejected

Liga MX heavyweights Pumas UNAM have already tested the waters, submitting a verbal proposal in the region of €4 million for Zinckernagel’s services. That approach, however, was swiftly and firmly rebuffed by the Chicago Fire hierarchy, who made it clear they are under no immediate pressure to sell.

With Zinckernagel tied down until 2028, Chicago hold all the cards in any potential negotiations, and the player himself is understood to be fully settled and thriving in life in the Windy City. That said, sources indicate Pumas are far from finished in their pursuit and could yet return with an improved package as they explore alternative structures to tempt the Fire into talks.

Zinckernagel’s value is backed by historic numbers. Last term, he racked up 15 goals and 15 assists, becoming the first player in Chicago Fire history to break the 10/10 barrier in a single campaign. This output solidified his status as one of the most prolific offensive threats in Major League Soccer.

From a European standpoint, former clubs Olympiacos, Standard Liège and Club Brugge are all on red alert, with senior figures at each viewing him as a ready-made, guaranteed solution capable of immediately elevating their title pushes. 

Sources suggest his familiarity with their environments, combined with his proven consistency at the highest level, makes him one of the most attractive short-term difference-makers on the market.

Across the Atlantic, interest is just as intense. From an MLS perspective, two unnamed heavyweight contenders are closely tracking developments and are prepared to seriously test Chicago’s resolve. 

Those clubs are understood to be weighing up record-breaking trade packages, including substantial allocation money and premium assets, in a bid to prise him away should the opportunity arise.
