The action continues in state houses, regulatory agencies and attorneys general offices with respect to the sweepstakes casino industry in the USA. SportsBoom is committed to keeping you abreast of new developments as the situations in various states continue to evolve.
In this latest installment, our focus turns towards three more states - West Virginia (WV), Connecticut (CT), and Mississippi (MS) as things are heating up.
Big Sweeps Casino Exodus from the Mountain State
On the heels of the recent disclosure by West Virginia's Attorney General, John McCuskey, that he has subpoenaed nearly fifty sweepstakes casinos, there has been a quick exodus of sweepstakes operators from the Mountain State.
According to McCuskey's remarks at the summer meeting of the National Council of Legislators from Gaming States, no sweepstakes operators have responded to his requests, however nineteen sweepstakes casinos have ceased operation in the state.
While we don't have McCuskey's list of nineteen sweeps casinos that have left, that number is surely higher. Just on the back of a napkin, we've come up with this list of casinos that has bailed on West Virginia's players over recent days:
- Baba Casino
- Carnival Citi Casino
- Chanced Casino
- Fortune Wheelz Casino
- Funrize Casino
- FunZCity Casino
- Hello Millions Casino
- Jackpota Casino
- Legendz Casino
- McLuck Casino
- Mega Bonanza Casino
- Modo Casino
- No Limit Coins Casino
- Play Fame Casino
- Pulsz Casino (and Pulsz Bingo)
- Punt Casino
- Rolling Riches Casino
- Sidepot Casino
- Spin Blitz Casino
- Spree Casino
- Stake.us Casino
- Tao Fortune Casino
Time is Running Out for Sweeps Operators in Connecticut
We previously reported Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont's signing into law the State's sweepstakes casino ban, making the state the second US state (after Montana) to explicitly ban sweepstakes casinos.
Connecticut's new law is extremely clear on the matter, stating that no person is permitted to "conduct or promote a sweepstakes or promotional drawing" and offers stiff penalties of up to $5,000 and up to five years in prison. The law does offer a carve-out for sweepstakes offered by grocery stores, but limits prizes to discounts instead of cash rewards.
Well, now that the bill has become a law, time is ticking. The Connecticut sweepstakes casino ban officially takes effect in just a little more than two months on October 1, 2025.
Surely, we are about to see an exodus like recently seen in West Virginia. We'll keep you updated as things progress.
Mississippi Gaming Commission Seeks Prosecution of Sweeps Operators
In yet another assault on sweepstakes casino gaming, the Mississippi Gaming Commission has sent out nearly a dozen cease-and-desist letters to sweeps casino operators.
The MGC states that if the player has the opportunity to provide consideration and win something of value, plus an element of chance exists in the game, Mississippi law would define that as "gaming."
Of course, the "opportunity to provide consideration" seems like a weak description of the purchase of worthless fun mode gold coins. However, we'll leave that argument up to the folks that went to law school.
In a news release, Mississippi Gaming Commission Executive Director Jay McDaniel stated that, outside of licensed casinos, casino games and sports wagering are not allowed in the state. He continued by saying that the MGC is providing criminal case files to both state and federal law enforcement agencies, with the hope that they will prosecute the cases.

Zula is another great online sweepstakes casino that accepts players from most USA states. At the time of writing, Zula still accepts registration from people in the states mentioned in this article's news items: West Virginia, Connecticut and Mississippi. That could change in the future, but for now that is the case.
