Despite an inglorious stint with the Cardinals since being selected first overall in 2019, quarterback Kyler Murray had a handful of legitimate NFL opportunities in free agency and his decision to land in Minnesota could well spell the end of JJ McCarthy’s tenure there.
Several high-level NFL offensive coaches, many of whom frankly did not have great grades on McCarthy prior to Minnesota taking him 10th overall in 2024, believe Murray will be savvy enough to win that job in Minnesota and distance himself from the youngster relatively quickly.
The Vikings are in win-now mode, and while they were able to land Murray for just $1.3M a season with Arizona on the hook for his outsized guarantees, there are only so many starting reps to go around, and the expectation is that Murray is given a serious opportunity to show he can master this system and dedicate himself to his craft in a way that was lacking in Arizona.
The minimal financial commitment is merely a factor of the contract and doesn’t reflect what Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell believes Murray can accomplish in his offense.
How Deep Will This Competition Run?
McCarthy’s development has been stunted at best and, according to sources with knowledge of the situation, he’s had difficulty developing chemistry with Minnesota’s top pass catchers and fully earning their trust.
Ball-placement accuracy has remained a big issue, top receiver Justin Jefferson was visibly frustrated at practices and games last season.
“Everything comes out of McCarthy’s hand hot,” said one defensive coach whose team faced the quarterback last season. “
He doesn’t understand touch and feel. There’s not a lot of nuance… He gets sped up too easily… He plays like a backup.”
While Murray’s body language and productivity have also fallen under question, to say nothing of his preparation, a fresh start with an elite quarterback-driven head coach has been more than enough to revive the careers of lesser quarterback prospects than Murray.
“O’Connell made sure he got first crack at him,” said a general manager who was monitoring the quarterback market, noting Murray only made one visit before signing.
“He wasn’t looking for a backup, he’s looking for an upgrade. Look, I’m not a big Murray guy, but he’s a better quarterback than McCarthy. Is that really a question?”
Murray will have to displayed an improved level of maturity, and there was also a strong sense that the Vikings offense will change to cater to Murray’s skillset, with more designed boots and waggles and moving the launch spot to make it easier for Murray, a smaller quarterback, to get out of traffic and find passing lanes downfield.
Murray’s athleticism is not in question and his playmaking ability is on another level than McCarthy. That will all likely result in him getting the bulk of critical starting reps by early in training camp, if not sooner. While McCarthy is far from a sunk cost at this point, it’s going to take a lot of work to get his game to the level required.
